How Our Landscape Design & Build Process Works

Cody Simpson owner of Droughtscape LA at drought tolerant landscape project in Los Angeles

1. Schedule Your Free Landscape Assessment

To schedule your free on-site assessment with Cody, simply click “Request Assessment” here or anywhere else on the site to fill out the contact form. Once the form is submitted, you’ll receive a few short educational videos from Cody, and he’ll follow up shortly after via text to ask some basic questions, provide a potential ballpark cost, and schedule your assessment.

2. Consultation, Measurements & Project Proposal

Cody can usually schedule assessments within about a week. During the visit, he’ll discuss what you want and need from your project while helping you explore layout ideas and material options. He’ll take detailed notes, along with precise measurements and photos of each project area. After the consultation, Cody will send you an Email — usually the same day — outlining the project details and estimated costs. Once any adjustments are made and a final cost is agreed upon, you’ll receive a finalized contract and deposit form to complete digitally.

3. Project Walk-Through & Production Planning

Once your signed contract and deposit are received, Cody will coordinate with our production team to schedule your project walk-through. This meeting can usually be arranged within about 2–3 weeks. During the walk-through, you’ll meet with Cody and members of our production team to begin planning the order of operations, project schedule, materials, and layout details so everything transitions smoothly into the production phase. Cody will remain involved with your project as needed throughout the process, especially when it comes to plant layouts and final design details.

4. Landscape Installation & Project Completion

Construction typically begins about 1–2 weeks after the walk-through, depending on the progress of our other active projects. Our production team works diligently to begin each project as soon as possible and will keep you informed as the schedule develops. Every demolition and installation step — along with each material used — is reviewed and approved with you on site before work proceeds. Most projects take between 1–10 weeks to complete.

Our goal is simple: create outdoor spaces that truly impress our clients. We don’t leave a project until that standard has been met.

Planning Your Home & Landscape Renovation

Before your assessment, start thinking about your priorities for the property and how you want each area to look and function. Some parts of a home renovation should be completed earlier in the process simply because of the amount of disruption they create. We don’t want new patios or landscapes damaged by major construction work later on. For the best overall practicality, we generally recommend approaching projects in roughly the following order:

Home and ADU renovations(General Contractor)

Swimming pools (General or Pool Contractor)

Retaining walls and slopes(Structural team for large walls, us for shorter ones)

Fencing(for safety, privacy, security, and perimeter definition)

Shade structures and custom-built elements(before or during patio construction)

Patios(before or during yard installation)

Yard areas(spaces for kids, pets, and general use)

Vegetable and herb boxes, and fruit trees(for sustainability)

Xeriscapes (eco-friendly landscapes that support native wildlife)

Lighting(to enhance usability and atmosphere)

Driveways (so they aren’t damaged during major construction work)

Lawn Replacement & Xeriscape Rebate Programs

Feel free to reach out to your local Water & Power department (or other local agencies) to learn about rebate programs for converting your lawn — probably already dead or dying — into a xeriscape. While we don’t work directly with these programs, you can use us as a middleman to help secure approvals using our detailed measurements and project quotes. Some cities have very specific requirements for their rebate programs, while others are more flexible. In some cases, especially with smaller yards, the additional stormwater management features required by certain programs may actually cost more than the rebate itself, so it’s important to keep that in mind. In our experience, rebates around $2 per square foot are rarely worth the additional requirements, while $5 per square foot can make much more sense financially. More recently, many rebate programs have begun requiring that the lawn being replaced is currently healthy and green. Lawns that were previously grass but are now dirt or weeds often won’t qualify for rebates.
